An annotated sample of a utility bill highlighting the account number, usage graph, and total amount due.

Bill and Important Information

Common Billing Terms

  • Base Service Charge: A fixed monthly fee that covers the cost of maintaining poles, wires, and transformers.
  • Energy Charge (kWh): The cost of the actual electricity you consumed during the billing cycle.
  • PCA (Power Cost Adjustment): A pass-through charge that reflects the fluctuating cost of wholesale power.
  • Multiplier: Used for specific meter types to calculate actual energy flow from the raw reading.

Usage Graphs

Your bill includes a 13-month history graph to help you track trends:

  • Year-Over-Year: Compare this month to the same month last year for the most accurate efficiency check.
  • Daily Average: Your total kWh divided by days in the cycle. Helps identify “vampire loads.”
  • Degree Days: Shows how extreme outdoor temperatures impacted your HVAC usage.
